Portsmouth Point blog offers Portsmouth Grammar School pupils, former pupils, parents and staff a daily forum for sharing ideas, opinions and enthusiasms. Whether exploring politics, music, film, sport, literature, science, photography, religion, history, philosophy or countless other topics, the blog offers something new and thought-provoking to read every day.

Portsmouth Point magazine was founded in Spring 2009 by Julian Elphick-Smith. Our most recent issue was published in December 2017, with 28 articles by pupils and staff focused on the theme of 'Truth'. This time last year, the Oxford English Dictionary announced its Word of the Year as "Post-Truth", defined as "relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping political debate or public opinion than appeals to emotional and personal belief." Our contributors investigate the power of the internet - in particular, the role of algorithms in shaping knowledge, understanding and belief - and the prevalence of "Fake News" in issues from politics to medicine and climate change.

Does truth equate to factuality? If so, are statistics sacred (and can we use economic criteria to maximise Christmas cheer through more efficient gift-giving)? Or is it transcendent – something we can only understand through an act of faith? Do traditional symbols such as the British monarchy and American flag represent essential truths or are they simply masking an uglier reality? Assuming there is such a thing as reality, how do we represent it? Several of our writers explore the challenge of representation, focusing on artists, writers and musicians from Piero della Francesca to Jane Austen and Ian Dury & the Blockheads.
