Ekphrastic Poetry: From A Cafe Terrace At Night

by Molly Cranston

I have written a series of poems inspired by some of my favourite pieces of art. 'Ekphrasis' means "a rhetorical device in which one medium of art tries to relate to another medium by defining and describing its essence and form" and I have entitled my collection 'Ekphrastic Poetry".

Little lemon cobbles
settle in the fringe shadows,
like bricks of mild silk
tapping fluidly under foot.

A denim stain sky
diluted by gloss motes,
melting under the fever
of their silver kindling.

A lone cafe oozes satsuma-gold
In the grey ceramic town,
A light remaining with
customers drifting homeward.

What a great idea and I really enjoyed reading the pieces. A great way to have a crack at starting (or continuing) poetry!
