Yesterday, Portsmouth remembered the 'Pompey Pals' who lost their lives in the Battle of Somme. A total of 759 soldiers from Portsmouth were killed in just two days in 1916. The 1st Pompey Pals (14th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment) was the first to ‘go over the top’.
There was a mention of the school during the short service - and its brave young men (pupils and a teacher) who gave their lives. The service took place at 11 am at Portsmouth Guildhall. The Portsmouth military wives were also present, as was former PGS Head of Music, Andrew Cleary. It was a great morning, despite the pouring rain.
