Einstein, one of the greatest theoretical physicists, is unsurprisingly remembered for his scientific ability. He developed the general theory for relatively and received the Nobel Prize in physics in 1921 for his services to theoretical physics. However, although well known for his scientific discoveries, Einstein’s fascinating personal life is not often widely known. So here are some things you might not know about the man behind e=mc^2.
1. Einstein left Germany forever in 1933, as Hitler came to power. Einstein was Jewish. He emigrated to the United States and became an American citizen in 1940.
2. Charlie Chaplin was a good friend of Einstein's. They famously went together to the premiere of Chaplin's film City Lights.
3. On the Eve of World War Two, Einstein wrote a letter to President Roosevelt to warn him of the progress being made by Germany with the atomic bomb and to persuade him to engage in nuclear weapons research. The USA became the only country to develop successfully an atomic bomb during the Second World War.
4. All the money that Einstein received from the Nobel Prize was given to his wife, as agreed in their divorce settlement.
5. Einstein encouraged Churchill to help rescue fellow Jewish scientists from Germany, which Churchill did.
6. He campaigned for civil rights for African-Americans in Princeton, NJ, where he lived and worked in the USA.
7. The post of President of Israel was offered to Einstein.
8. He fell in love with Mozart's music.
9. Einstein's cottage in Germany was transformed into an Aryan camp under Hitler's rule.
10. During autopsy, Einstein's brain was removed in the hope that in the future scientists would be able to discover what made him so intelligent.
